This was meant to be a fairly straight forward 125km ride through the Kentucky country side surrounded by cornfields, tobacco crops and more tofu (soy bean) than is reasonable in this world. And so it was until our intrepid official photographer decided to stop and take one more elegant photo. In the process he managed to fall off his stationary bike gashing his leg on the front sprocket. No problems, we'll put a makeshift bandage over it and ride like hell for 30km to our destination since the sag wagon had driven off to book in. Hmmm - doesn't look great Howie. Maybe you should go get it checked by a doctor. Three hours later he returned having had internal stitches to repair the frayed tendon and a half dozen external ones to pull the cut together and a major bandage over his lower leg. No riding for three to six weeks. Absolute bummer having come so far on the ride. Worse still, it is his right leg so he can't even drive the car for us!!! With Trish on antibiotics for a tooth infection the group is crumbling on the home straight. We will update you tomorrow on Howie's condition. An 8 day downgraded to a 1 because he can't drive.

I'm gutted for you Howie: just doing the right thing for us back here by taking a few nice snaps. So who will push Mal up the big hills? You'll need to get a bigger car to fit you, Trish, Mal and 3 bikes. At least now you can taunt the others full time. Take care? Too late for that advice so just keep smiling. Cheers

Poor Howie! Maybe on the flats you could have coasted along but not up the Appalachians! Look after yourself too Trish - dental care in US reportedly expensive!! We are off to fight the crowds at the Colosseum - no lions but the heat is a challenge! Dale and Greg still missing you all!

You poor bugger Howie. Selflessly going ahead to take photos and look what happens. With the powerhouse of the peloton now on crutches I have grave fears for the expeditions success. May the rest of you stay safe...
