We are in Eastern Kentucky and have been warned about the dogs that race out to try and bite cyclists. Today we found them. Our basic technique is to yell a lot and try to stop them early. John's ultimate deterrent is metal poker that he uses to wack them with. He had to use it in anger once today and it was very successful. Hopefully the dog will recover or else we could be in our own version of Deliverance.
This area of the USA has been seriously affected by the downturn in the coal industry over the past decade and is easily the poorest area we have ridden through. Very sobering. The scenery is rugged, green and hilly which would be great if we could stop and observe it rather than fighting to get up every hill. Tomorrow promises more of the same ....
The hill riders called this a 9 day - the none hill ones a 5.
